Procedure for Preparing and Transferring Model Output to PCMDI
The simulations called for by the WGCM Climate Simulation Panel and summarized in the last table at end of the document (
standard_output.html
) should be run. Monthly-mean, daily and 3-hourly output fields (listed in the other tables of that document) should all be saved for the specified time periods.
Model
output will have to be rewritten to conform to the IPCC requirements for model output (see
IPCC_output_requirements.htm
). The easiest way to meet these requirements may be to rely on a FORTRAN 90 software library (called CMOR) developed by PCMDI and documented at:
http://cmor.llnl.gov/
. CMOR can be obtained at:
cmor.
Before producing hundreds of gigabytes of rewritten output, a small sample of the output should be ftp'd to PCMDI where it will be checked for conformance with the IPCC requirements. The following data should be included in the sample:
Time-independent fields:
land fraction (sftlf) - A time-independent 2-d field
sea floor depth (zobt) - A time-independent 2-d ocean field
At least 2 years of monthly mean data for the following fields (preferably including a leap year for models with leap years):
precipitation (pr) -- a 2-d atmosphere field
surface air temperature (tas) -- a 2-d atmos. field with a 'scalar' dimension
air temperature (ta) -- a 3-d atmos. field on pressure levels
cloud fraction (cl) -- a 3-d atmos. field on model levels
northward ocean heat transport (hfogo) -- a 1-d ocean field
ocean meridional overturning stream function (stfmmc) -- an ocean basin cross-section
sea surface temperature (tos) -- a 2-d ocean field
sea water salinity (so) -- a 3-d ocean field.
At least 2 years of daily data for the following fields (preferably including a leap year for models with a leap year):
outgoing longwave flux (rlut) - a 2-d field
air temperature (ta) - a 3-d field
1 year of 3-hourly data for the following field:
precipitation (pr)
At least 2 years of the following annually calculated "extremes index":
total number of frost days (fd)
Any other fields you suspect might have problems
The data should be sent to the following anonymous ftp site:
ftp sprite.llnl.gov
anonymous
<your email address as password>
cd incoming/ipcc
bin
put data
Advise taylor13@llnl.gov that you've deposited data on anonymous ftp, and it will be checked for compliance. Any problems with the format and structure of the data will be communicated to the contributor. (Note that the no checks will be performed to determine if the fields themselves are sensible.)
If problems are found, steps 3 and 4 will be repeated until everything is o.k. Then, presumably, the complete set of model output will be rewritten.
A 1-terrabyte disk with USB2 and Firewire connections will be sent by PCMDI to the contributing group. (It may be possible to send more than 1 disk, if demand for these disks is not excessive and if this would speed transfer of the data.) PCMDI has purchased 12 of these disks, which have been formatted for Linux platforms. Please let taylor13@llnl.gov know as soon as possible when model output is expected to be ready for transfer so that disks can be sent out in time. A disk will normally not be sent until a sample of the data has checked out o.k. Output from all model experiments need not be sent at the same time, but since sending disks back and forth takes time, it will probably be best not to break up the transfer into too many chunks.
Modeling groups will rewrite model output to the 1 terabyte disk and return it to PCMDI by FedEx.
The data will be transferred to PCMDI's 40 terabyte RAID storage system (arranging the files in a uniform directory structure), and and it will be made accessible to those researchers who have registered with the WGCM Climate Simulation Panel.
One final note regarding the procedure: please store all model output in the following directory structure (the order of the subdirectories is not as important as their names).

[experiment] = one of the following:
